Thermal insulation and corrosion protection in petrochemical plants

In petrochemical plants insulation and corrosion protection are not two separate jobs — the same surface has to withstand the operating temperature, the chemical atmosphere and moisture, for years between turnarounds.

Oil, gas and petrochemical

What it solves

Tanks, columns, exchangers and pipelines lose heat and hide corrosion under conventional lagging. A coating system — primer, thermal layer and topcoat — delivers insulation and steel protection in one, with no cavity for moisture to sit in.

Industry references

At a BP plant in Germany the system was applied through the contractor XERVON Oberflächentechnik GmbH, a specialist in industrial surface protection. For that kind of client documentation and repeatable application are a condition, not a recommendation.

High temperatures

For lines and equipment above 200 °C, high-temperature formulations are used with a primer of the same temperature class. The system is chosen by the highest operating temperature, not the average — short peaks are what defeats a wrongly selected coating.

Corrosion protection

For steel in an aggressive atmosphere there is a solvent-based zinc primer and a two-pack primer, depending on the substrate condition and the preparation that is feasible on site.

Important note

Thermal coatings marked NF carry no fire rating. Where fire resistance of a steel structure is required, intumescent coatings are used — see the Fire protection page.
