Energy efficiency in schools, kindergartens and public buildings

Schools are heated and cooled from a public budget, and works on them have to fit into the holidays — two facts that rule out any insulation involving scaffolding and a long programme.

What it solves

Classrooms under a metal or flat roof become unusable in summer, and in winter heat is lost through the same surfaces. The coating works both ways: it reflects solar radiation in summer and reduces conduction in winter.

Demo project at Dapto High School

As part of its community support policy C-COAT applied a thin layer over the metal roof of a school office built by the students themselves. The results were such that the project was recommended to New South Wales ministers.

In a climate where cooling runs all day, reducing the thermal load through the envelope directly reduces the consumption of the cooling system.

A healthy space

Raising the inner wall surface temperature above the dew point removes the conditions for mould in classrooms and washrooms. The formulation is water-based.

Working around occupants

It is applied by roller, brush or spray, in most cases without scaffolding and without demolition. Works are planned section by section, so the institution does not have to move out.
