Thermal insulation of carriages, locomotives and vehicle bodies

In a vehicle every centimetre of interior space is billable and every kilogram is fuel cost — which is why thick insulation on the body is not an option.

Rail and transport

What it solves

A metal body overheats in the sun and the air conditioning runs all day to compensate. The coating reflects solar radiation and reduces conduction through the skin, so the air conditioning runs shorter and draws less.

Delivered projects

For LOKORAIL in Bratislava the coating was applied to rail vehicles, and for Trovon in Australia to locomotive air-conditioning units — that is, both to the heat source and to the space being cooled.

Space and mass

The layer is measured in tenths of a millimetre. Interior height and width are untouched, and the added mass is negligible against conventional insulation for the same purpose.

Condensation in the cabin

Cold metal skin collects condensate, which then soaks the interior lining and produces odour and mould. The coating raises the inner surface temperature above the dew point and so removes the cause rather than the symptom.

Fleet maintenance

A damaged area is repainted locally during the normal maintenance cycle, with no panel replacement.
